STUDENT SAFETY

It is always important to talk to your children about their surroundings and being safe. Please review the following safety tips with your children.

  • Don’t talk to strangers.

  • Don’t take anything from strangers.

  • Don’t go anywhere with someone you don’t know.

  • Stay more than an arm’s reach from strangers. If you are approached by a stranger, seek help immediately.

  • Trust your instincts, if you feel you are being followed or something is not right, seek help immediately.

  • Use the buddy system, avoid walking anywhere alone.

  • Review contact telephone numbers and home safety practices.

  • When seeking help, always go to a trusted adult – teacher, coach, police officer, parent or guardian, or older siblings.

  •  If a stranger grabs you, do everything you can to stop him or her from pulling you away. Drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream. Do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help you. If someone is dragging you away, scream, “this is not my dad,” or “this is not my mom.”

  • Report any suspicious activity to your local school and police department.

Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) at Cayucos School

Cayucos Elementary School is proud to participate in California’s Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program, a state-funded initiative aimed at supporting tobacco-free schools and healthy choices for all students.

What is TUPE?

TUPE is a California Department of Education (CDE) program that provides funding to schools to:

  • Prevent student use of tobacco, nicotine, and vape products

  • Educate students about the risks of tobacco and substance use

  • Promote healthy behaviors and decision-making skills

At Cayucos School, we use TUPE resources to provide prevention-focused lessons, student engagement activities, and professional development for staff. Our goal is to create a safe, informed, and healthy learning environment for all.

Foster Youth Services at Cayucos School

Cayucos School is committed to supporting students in foster care by providing strong advocacy, stability, and access to educational opportunities. Under California law, foster youth are entitled to key protections and services—here’s how we’re meeting those mandates:

Legal Foundations

  • Education Code §§ 42920–42926
    Established the Foster Youth Services Coordinating Programs (FYSCPs), funded via local county offices to deliver tutoring, counseling, mentoring, and transition supports for foster youth California Department of Education+11California Department of Education+11Findlaw+11.

    1. Ensure proper placement, enrollment, and school checkout processes;

    2. Facilitate seamless transfer of credits, records, and grades;

    3. Allow students to stay in their “school of origin” for the full school year, unless a formal best-interest exception is made in writing sthopepublicschools.org+7Findlaw+7sccoe.org+7sthopepublicschools.org.

How We Support Foster Students

  • Dedicated Foster Youth Liaison
    Cayucos School designates a trained staff member to coordinate school services and support compliance with EC § 48853.5. They assist with enrollment, records transfer, transportation, and experiential activities.

  • “School of Origin” Stability
    In the event of a placement change, we honor AB 490 for all foster students by maintaining enrollment in their original school for the full year—unless the foster youth and their educational rights holder agree on a change or only if it is deemed not in the best interest cdefoundation.org+15sccoe.org+15lacoe.edu+15.

  • Instant Enrollment & Credit Transfer
    Whether transferring within the district or from another, foster youth are enrolled immediately with full credit and grade protection as required by EC § 51225.2 & § 48853.5 fyes.fcoe.org.

  • Equal Access to Programs & Athletics
    Foster students have the same opportunities for class participation, clubs, sports, and enrichment as their peers, regardless of placement changes (EC § 48850(a)) edcoe.org.
